Following our visit to Corfu, we decided to visit another Greek island, Kefalonia. The character of Kefalonia is different to Corfu, the landscape seeming more rocky and less green, however it is still very beatiful. We stayed near the town of Sami on the eastern side of the island. Sami is ideally placed to visit some of the must-see sights, specifically the Drogarati caves and the Melissani lake. The caves at Drogoarati are home to thousands of stalagmites and stalactites - you can see in a couple of the photos below - and it's also very cool down there, a great place to visit on a baking hot day!

The lake at nearby Melissani is fantastic. You descend down underground and walk down a small tunnel before ending at the lake. The roof of the chamber caved in several thousand years ago, so make sure you visit on a sunny day - the sunlight coming in through the hole in the roof illuminates the water making for a stunning setting. You can get on a small rowing boat to take a trip around the waters to the second chamber (where the roof is intact). Make sure you tip the boatman!

Other highlights on the island include Myrtos beach, the pretty (and exclusive) town of Fiskardo in the north, and also, the trip across to Ithaca is worth doing for a day - make sure you have a hire car, and you can explore most of the island quite easily. The ferry leaves from Sami.
