| We recently visited Niederau, in the Wildschönau valley of Austria. The Wildschönau is a peaceful area comprising of a few small villages - Niederau, Oberau, Mühltal ,Auffach, and Thierbach. Life here is slower paced than some other resorts so if you're after a peaceful holiday then we'd highly recommend it! In the summer, the main activity is walking, although there was a popular paragliding school opposite our hotel in Niederau. On most days there was a constant stream of landings in the field! |
There are plenty of things to see and do - if you want
a busier day, get the post-bus down to Worgl, then take the train to either
Innsbruck or Salzburg. Both cities are worth a visit.
Also recommended is a walk down the Kundl
Gorge. Take the postbus to Mühltal and after a pleasant 3/4 hour
walk through some meadows (or a trip on the Bummelzug!)
you arrive at the beginning of the gorge. A stroll through will take an
hour or so, during which time you will pass some spectacular scenery.You
end up in the small town of Kundl where you can stop for some lunch before
either walking back or hopping on the train to Worgl.
For some more serious hiking, take the gondola up to the Markbachjoch - from here there are many walks around the top of the mountains you can do ( map showing the routes is recommended, although they are well signposted also). There are several restaurants located around the mountains for drink stops, and also a collection of slightly too-friendly goats!
There are many other things to
see and do - the wood museum in Auffach is worth a visit if only
because it's a rather bizarre place, the tiny house seeming to have
endless rooms crammed with allsorts of wooden items in no particular
order! |
