Sorry about the lack of updates… software all change!
So, I’ve not updated this blog in quite some time. Why is that?
Well, after some time with Mediaportal, I moved to using Windows Media Centre instead. So why switch? Well, the key reason was reliability. Whilst MP was certainly fully featured and looked great, there were a few too many reliability niggles which had a distinct effect on the WAF aspect of things…
The worst issue was the frequency at which the TVServer service would lock up because of a weak signal, and it would almost never recover. And about 50% of the time, if you were watching live tv, this would crash the display driver, freezing the PC. Rebooting because of this became a pretty regular occurrence.
With the release of Windows 7, the TV side of Media Centre was much improved so I decided to give it a try.
Installation, if you can call it that, was a breeze. Unlike MediaPortals configuration apps, WMC can be configured via remote from within the main interface. OK, there is a lot less to configure, but I was up and running in next to no time.
Initial feelings were that the interface is a lot “snappier” than Mediaportal - everything happens a little quicker and more smoothly, although it doesn’t look as nice (especially if you had been using a skin with MP). The music player view is nice, with a wallpaper of album art scrolling slowly in the background. The Internet based EPG is good, although quite a lot of the free channels I can have access to are missing.
One good thing with MP was the extendability - and this goes for WMC too. I’ve already installed several add-ons and will be updating with more posts about these in the near future.
